Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park, located in southern Sri Lanka, is one of the best places in Asia to see wild elephants in their natural habitat. Established in 1972, the park was created to provide a sanctuary for animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, which now forms a scenic backdrop to the park’s landscape. Covering over 30,000 hectares of grasslands, scrub, and forest, Udawalawe is home to more than 600 elephants, making sightings almost guaranteed on a safari. In addition to elephants, the park shelters water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boar, jackals, and crocodiles, along with over 200 bird species, including raptors and waterbirds. The wide, open plains make game drives particularly rewarding, as wildlife is easier to spot compared to more forested parks. The nearby Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants before releasing them back into the wild, offering another touching experience for visitors. Udawalawe’s accessibility and high chances of elephant encounters make it an ideal safari destination for families, photographers, and wildlife lovers.
